Opening Entries

1 min read#207

Opening journal entries are the entries recorded at the beginning of the accounting period or when the company is established, and they are intended to record all opening assets, liabilities, and equity. These entries are considered the starting point for the accounting records and are used to track the company's financial position from the beginning of the accounting period.

To illustrate how opening journal entries are recorded, we will use a simple example:

Assume we have a new company that started with the following assets, liabilities, and equity:

  • Cash: $10,000
  • Equipment: $5,000
  • Bank loans: $3,000
  • Capital: $12,000

The opening journal entries would be as follows:

  1. Recording assets: `` Debit: $10,000 - Cash Debit: $5,000 - Equipment ``
  1. Recording liabilities: `` Credit: $3,000 - Bank loans ``
  1. Recording equity: `` Credit: $12,000 - Capital ``

Using the accounting equation (Assets = Liabilities + Equity), we can verify the accuracy of the entries:

Assets = $10,000 (Cash) + $5,000 (Equipment) = $15,000
Liabilities + Equity = $3,000 (Bank loans) + $12,000 (Capital) = $15,000

This check ensures that the opening entries are balanced and correct.
