Between Customization and Standards: Are You a Technical Manager or a "Task Executor" for Your Clients?

2 min read#395

In requirements gathering meetings, we often hear a famous phrase from department managers: "We operate in a special way, and the system must adapt to us," and here the application manager faces the real test: do they choose the easy path (appeasement) or the right path (leadership)?

The trap of "emotional automation"

In the world of enterprise software, there are things to watch out for; there is a fine line between customization and distortion. Many application managers fall into the trap of "pleasing the business user," and one of them turns from a digital transformation leader into a task executor; the client asks, the manager tailors, and the result? A software mutant that is neither SAP nor Odoo, but merely a distorted version.

Many ERP projects turn into a process of "emotional automation"; screens and reports are designed to satisfy the ego of long-time employees who do not want to change "the way they have been used to for 20 years." The result is spending millions of dollars on global software just to get a screen that resembles the pen-and-paper form they used before. Why is Standard the "lifeline"? When you choose a global company like SAP or Odoo, you are not buying a "tool" but a "management methodology." Sticking to the Standard means: Speed to market: Instead of spending months developing new code, you can start immediately. Ease of hiring: When you use the standard version, it becomes easier to find employees already trained on the system, instead of spending months explaining your software inventions to the new employee. Psychological stability for the technical team: Fewer modifications mean fewer bugs, which means a technical team focused on development, not firefighting.

When do we really resort to customization? We do not say customization is absolutely forbidden, but it must be subject to the principle of "competitive advantage": Do it: If this modification will give your company a real competitive edge in the market that competitors do not have. Avoid it: If the modification is just to change the "table layout" or "field order" or because the manager "feels comfortable" with that shape. "No" that saves millions A successful manager is the one who has the courage to tell the CEO: "Our current way of working in this department is wrong, and the software is correcting it for us, so we will not change the software; we will change our procedures." This sentence may seem harsh at first, but it saves the company millions of riyals in maintenance, technical support, and future upgrades.

Final word: Remember that you brought in a global expert (the software) to guide you, so do not buy the compass and insist on walking in the direction you think is right! What is the strangest customization request you have encountered that was clearly "destroying the system"?
