Restaurant POS or ERP? Test a full shift before you choose
A practical Saudi restaurant software checklist covering orders, kitchen, inventory, branches, accounting, and e-invoicing.
By the SmartPro team
A good POS makes checkout fast. Fast order entry alone does not tell you what happened in the kitchen, what ingredients remain, or whether a branch made money. Start the comparison with a real shift in your restaurant, not a count of screens.
A simple POS may serve a small outlet with limited operations. If you run several branches or need orders, stock, and accounts to work together, test a broader restaurant system.
Ask the vendor to run a busy shift
Start with a table order, then modify it. Watch it reach the kitchen, cancel an item after sending, split the bill, and close the shift. Request a report showing what sold, what ingredients were used, and which differences need investigation.
If you deliver or run more than one branch, add a scenario from your real channels. Ask which steps are built in and which require an integration or manual work. Do not assume that every capability in a demonstration is included in the basic plan.
Five questions that expose the real fit
Ask every vendor the same questions:
- How does an order move from POS to the kitchen display?
- Can you see ingredient stock and differences between expected and actual use?
- What happens when the till loses connectivity?
- How do you close a shift and reconcile cash, payments, and reports?
- What is included in the price for branches, devices, training, support, and integrations?
E-invoicing is part of the daily workflow
In Saudi Arabia, ask to see the invoice types relevant to your business and how errors and integration are handled when your business is in scope for Phase 2. Requirements depend on official notices; check ZATCA's current guidance before making a purchase decision.
Judge the work after the sale
Do not pay for a long feature list your team will never use. Equally, a cheap till is not a bargain if every evening ends with copying sales into separate stock and accounting files. Compare the time saved by a connected flow, and get implementation and support commitments in writing.
